Enjoy your shared student experience with everyone

DO: Be a friend to your housemates

Make friends with your roommates. It is best to select people you already know and who you are comfortable with. This could be friends that you met in class or from your dorm days, or even people from your hometown attending the same university.

DON’T – Create an Untidy Mess

Most uni students find it very tempting to leave their stuff lying around. It’s tempting to throw a jacket on a chair or leave dishes in the sink after a meal instead of washing them. Do not do this. Being messy is the most common cause of conflict between roommates. Do not let your personal items or towels take over your living room. Hopefully, your housemates are also doing the same. DO- Create a chore list with fun penalties for forgetting

When sharing with other students, it is essential to share chores. If chores are not divided by duty or by roster, only the neatest people will be responsible for the work and resentment grows.

Assign chores according to what each person enjoys and is good at. One housemate may enjoy a quick vacuum but dislike getting their hands dirty with dishes. One housemate may not mind carrying the rubbish, but cannot bring themselves to clean a toilet. List unpopular tasks and divide up favourite jobs. Take your turn.

DON’T – Take or touch things that don’t belong to you

Respect your housemates’ privacy and their property. Do not enter their rooms without permission and do not take anything or use their things. It is common for roommates to eat food from the pantry or fridge. Remember that even if the chocolate bar or crisps are tempting, your roommate may be using it as a pick-me up after their next big test!
